Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much to feed my dog by weight??
Use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula: 70 ? (weight in kg)^0.75. Then multiply by a life-stage factor for Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER). For example, a neutered adult dog: MER = RER ? 1.6. Our calculator above does this automatically ? just enter your dog's weight.
What is the RER formula for dogs??
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) = 70 ? (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is the baseline calories your dog needs at rest. Active, growing, or pregnant dogs need more ? typically 1.6 to 4.0 times RER depending on life stage.
How many cups of food should I feed my dog per day??
It depends on the food's calorie density and your dog's MER. For example, a 10 kg (22 lb) neutered adult dog needs roughly 470 kcal/day. If your food is 360 kcal/cup, that's about 1.3 cups per day, split into two meals. Use the calculator above for a personalized number.
Is this feeding calculator free??
Yes ? completely free. No sign-up, no paywall. It uses the same AAHA and WSAVA veterinary-standard formulas that professionals use.
Does the calculator work for cats too??
Yes. Switch the species selector to Cat. Cat MER multipliers differ from dogs ? neutered cats typically use MER = RER ? 1.2, intact cats RER ? 1.4. The calculator applies the correct formula automatically.
